wav_inject is only part of a toolset for working with audio files. scene/backlash was a "warez" group from the 1990's to beginning of 2000. but just because this tool was used in the warez scene does not mean that there is legal uses for it. i am a game developer and even i have taken a close look at this, and very interesting. i still dont know how exactly it is used, but i do have a good idea. 1st you need a tool that can remove the audio from a container like a .big, .pak, .fsb and so on. after you have the contents extracted you will notice there will be a title like "name_******_******" the * is numbers and in hex are the beginning and and time of the audio bit. the files are then edited to a smaller size, than packaged into another container that is recognized by an unpacker.
1. unpack files
2. save file names and extensions to a txt file
3. edit to smaller size
4. re package
4. write you batch to unpack and re edit files to original state
5. inject back into empty container

it has the same concept as the unpack/inject that you would see with dreamcast games.
hope this shed a bit of light on the subject. i too wish to know more about this, and this will work great for a project that i am working on.

injecting has many limitations and I refer to the classical injection in which the original archive size remains the same because otherwise it's not an injection job but a rebuilding one which is a totally different thing.

the first problem of the injectors is that the new file to inject must have a size equal or minor than the original one.
the second is that if an archive uses encryption/obfuscation/encoding/compression "globally" (whole archive, like worldshift) then you can do nothing, while if these algorithms are applied on each archived file you must implement them too (a classical bad situation is with deflated data where zlib compresses data less than other deflate implementations even using the maximum level of compression).

anyway, as already said, from your words you need a rebuilder and not an injector and rebuilders are written from scratch when you need them.

if it can be of help my fsbext tool (for the FSB files) supports also the rebuilding

if you need to encode/re-encode an mp3 why don't you simply use Lame?
anyway I have not understood what you mean so that's what I guessed
